HARD ANODIZING – HARD ANODIC FINISHING OF ALUMINUM MATERIALS

 

The hard anodizing process is an electrolytic treatment of aluminum materials, resulting in the formation of a hard and thick aluminum layer. The process primarily serves to protect components of various types against wear and corrosion, but also enables a multitude of other functional applications. The process complies with the ISO 10074 standard. Hard anodized layers are created by anodic oxidation in a cold, acidic electrolyte of a specific composition. An electric current is used to form a protective aluminum oxide layer on the workpiece surface. Compared to conventional anodized coatings, hard anodized coatings are thicker and more wear-resistant.

Characteristics

The achievable layer thickness depends on the application, the desired layer properties, and other parameters. For most applications, layer thicknesses of 10–100 µm can be achieved. Only 50% of the oxide layer is built up; the rest penetrates the base material. This must be taken into account during the design phase.

Areas of application

Hard anodizing surface finishes can be used wherever corrosion protection, wear resistance, dimensional accuracy, sliding properties, or insulation are required for aluminum materials.
Hard anodizing layers are characterized by good adhesion to the base material.

 

HARD ANODIZING – BLACK

Hard anodized parts usually turn gray to dark gray, depending on the alloy. The pores are very small and difficult to color. Black is usually used as the color.
